Europe throws away 4.9 million tonnes of e-waste a year

Electronics are the fastest-growing waste stream on the continent, and only a minority is formally collected. The single most effective intervention is not recycling — it is extending the life of devices already in circulation.
The collection gap
The WEEE Directive obliges producers to finance the collection and treatment of electronic waste, and retailers to take back old devices. In practice a large share of small electronics never reaches a formal channel; they sit in drawers or leave the EU as untracked second-hand goods.
Why lifetime beats recycling
Around 80% of a smartphone's lifetime carbon footprint is created before it is switched on for the first time, during mining, refining and assembly. Recycling recovers materials but cannot recover that embodied carbon.
Keeping a phone for four years instead of two roughly halves its annual footprint — a bigger reduction than any recycling programme can deliver.
What is changing in policy
Ecodesign rules now require spare-part availability and battery replaceability for several device classes, and the repairability score is becoming a standard shelf label. Expect resale value to increasingly track repairability.
